A Journey Into the Plantations, Villages & Culture Behind Every Cup
From fertile river valleys to mist-covered highland farms, Yunnan is where China’s coffee story begins.
In just over a century, coffee here has grown from missionary gardens into one of the world’s fastest-rising specialty origins. Today, Yunnan produces over 98% of China’s coffee beans, and its reputation is steadily moving from bulk commodity to globally celebrated single origin.
This is more than just coffee tasting—it’s a hands-on journey with the farmers who grow it, the families who roast it, and the communities who have made coffee part of Yunnan’s evolving identity.

Why a Coffee Culture Trip in Yunnan?
- Yunnan’s highlands (1,000–2,000+ m) provide ideal conditions for Arabica.
- Microclimates across Pu’er, Baoshan, Lincang, and Dehong yield distinct flavor profiles.
- Experience both traditional smallholder farms and modern experimental processing.
- Coffee here is still young—meeting the farmers means seeing the future of coffee in real time.
- You’ll not only taste coffee—you’ll pick, roast, and brew it alongside the people who cultivate it.

Day 3
Coffee, Culture & Ancient Bridge in Baoshan
Morning
Discover the charm of a Dai minority village in the fertile Lujiangba valley. Stroll beneath the 600-year-old banyan tree, a sacred symbol of longevity and community, before sampling the valley’s bounty—freshly picked seasonal fruits straight from village trees.
At a welcoming Dai family home, you’ll learn how coffee is prepared in the traditional Dai style: roasting beans in a large wok, grinding them with a stone mill, then cooking the grounds wrapped in a cheese cloth inside a teapot. The result is a rich, aromatic brew reminiscent of Turkish-style coffee. Alongside this unique experience, your host will prepare a delicious Dai homestyle hand-grabbed lunch—a true farm-to-table feast.
Afternoon
In the afternoon, we’ll journey into the lush Gaoligong Mountain, one of Yunnan’s most ecologically diverse regions, to visit a thoughtfully run organic coffee farm perched at 1,800 meters. Here, coffee is more than a crop—it’s a carefully designed closed-loop system that prioritizes sustainability, quality, and traceability.
Every stage of the coffee’s journey is managed on-site: seed selection, growing environment, harvest timing, post-harvest handling, storage, and roasting. By keeping the entire process in-house, the farm ensures transparency and consistency while minimizing environmental impact. This approach has made Gaoligong-grown beans some of the most respected in Yunnan’s specialty coffee scene.
You’ll roll up your sleeves and participate in parts of the process—harvesting ripe cherries, trying your hand at washing or drying beans(available during the harvest season), and even roasting a small batch yourself. Afterwards, sit down with the farmers for a guided tasting of four distinct coffees, each showcasing different varietals and roast profiles. As you sip, the growers will share the stories behind their beans—how varietal origin, microclimate, and roast philosophy shape each unique flavor.
This visit offers not just a taste of Yunnan’s finest coffee, but also a deeper appreciation of how modern craft and traditional ecological wisdom can work hand in hand.
Evening
Before sunset, we’ll stop at the Double Rainbow Bridge, a historic Qing-era double-span iron chain bridge across the Nujiang River. Once part of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, this engineering marvel connected caravans and communities for centuries and remains a powerful symbol of Baoshan’s role in cross-border trade.
We’ll end the day with a farm-to-table dinner at a coffee grower’s home in the Gaoligong mountains. Enjoy a meal prepared with locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, paired with stories of life as a coffee farmer. Tonight’s accommodation is a homestay with the coffee family, giving you a rare chance to experience rural Yunnan hospitality in the heart of its coffee country.
